DITO tops Internet speed in tourist destinations in the Philippines

Telecom provider DITO leads the mobile experience of visitors in most tourist destinations in the Philippines.

Telecom market insights company Opensignal said it has analyzed the mobile network experience of users across the main tourist destinations in the Philippines, according to the Department of Tourism’s list of places with the most visitors.

Opensignal said it focused on two categories of locations: Filipino cities known for their tourist attractions, which draw a lot of domestic and international travelers; and regions known for famous holiday resorts and beaches.

Based on its analysis, Opensignal said DITO comes first for all the metrics analyzed across all 13 cities, either outright or jointly with Globe or Smart.

DITO triumphs for Upload Speed Experience outright in all cities and in almost all the cities for “Consistent Quality.”

Smart takes the joint top spot in several cities for Reliability Experience and Availability. Meanwhile, Globe has the joint highest score for Video Experience in most cities.

The overall experience of mobile users in the Philippines varies significantly between tourist destinations, Opensignal said.

“Our users enjoy the fastest average download speeds on DITO’s network in Cebu City and Makati City — which host many visitors from abroad. This could explain the prioritization of investment in network infrastructure in these areas,” the company said.

DITO users enjoy the most consistent quality of services in Manila, Makati City, and Pasay City, which also see substantial numbers of international travelers.

In nine provinces famous for their resorts and beaches, DITO users see the highest scores across almost all the metrics analyzed — either outright or jointly.

Globe comes first outright for two categories in Bohol — Consistent Quality and Reliability Experience.

“Our users on DITO’s network have the fastest overall download speeds and the best experience of video services in Cebu across the analyzed areas. Meanwhile, our DITO users see the fastest upload speed and the most consistent and reliable mobile services in La Union,” it said.

Opensignal said it looked at the mobile network experience of our users across 13 Filipino cities that host substantial numbers of travelers (both domestic and international) based on statistics from the country’s Department of Tourism. These cities include Bacolod City, Baguio City, Cebu City, Davao City, Iloilo City, Lapu-Lapu City, Makati City, Manila, Naga City, Parañaque, Pasay City, Rodriguez (Rizal) and Zamboanga City.

DITO comes first for all the metrics across all 13 cities, either outright or jointly with Globe or Smart. DITO triumphs for Upload Speed Experience outright in all cities, while it has the highest outright score for Consistent Quality in all cities bar Lapu-Lapu City. Fast upload speeds are essential if tourists are to easily share their content online, especially on popular platforms like TikTok.

For other metrics, DITO shared the winners’ podium with its competitors across many more cities. Smart takes the joint top spot in eight cities for Reliability Experience, seven for Availability, and four for Download Speed Experience. Meanwhile, Globe has the jointly highest score for Video Experience in nine analyzed cities — although, in four cities, we observed a three-way statistical tie.

To briefly look at some of the highest scores across the cities —users enjoy the fastest average download speeds on DITO’s network in Cebu City and Makati City, clocking in at more than 55Mbps — much faster than what we observed in the recent Philippines Mobile Network Experience report.

Both Cebu City and Makati City host substantial numbers of visitors from abroad, which could explain the prioritization of investment in network infrastructure in these areas. DITO users enjoy the most consistent quality of services in Manila, Makati City, and Pasay City. These three cities are part of the Metro Manila area and see substantial numbers of international travelers as well.

DITO and Smart reached Reliability Experience scores exceeding 800 points in numerous cities like Davao City, Makati City, Manila, Parañaque, Pasay City, and Rodriguez. Comparatively, Globe didn’t pass this milestone in any of the observed cities.  Opensignal’s Reliability Experience is a recently introduced metric that measures the ability of Opensignal users to connect to and complete basic tasks on communication service providers’ networks.

Opensignal also investigated the mobile network experience for the same metrics of our users across nine Filipino provinces that are famous for their resorts and beaches, which attract numerous tourists, both from abroad and from other areas of the Philippines. We looked at the provinces of Aklan (famous for the Boracay island), Batangas, Bohol, Camarines Sur, Cebu, Iloilo, La Union, Palawan (well known for El Nido beaches), and Zambales.

Similar to the results across Filipino cities analyzed above, DITO also sees the highest scores across almost all the provinces and metrics, either outright or jointly. DITO achieves a clean sweep, having the sole highest score for every metric in Batangas, Cebu, and Palawan. The operator also comes outright first for Upload Speed Experience in all provinces bar Aklan. It is unmatched for Consistent Quality in seven provinces and for Availability in six provinces. It scores the highest for Download Speed Experience, Video Experience, and Reliability Experience in five provinces as well. Our users on DITO’s network have the fastest overall download speeds and the best experience of video services in Cebu — which observed many visitors from abroad — across the analyzed areas.

Meanwhile, DITO users see the fastest upload speed and the most consistent and reliable mobile services in La Union.

However, DITO doesn’t triumph for all metrics, as Globe comes first outright for two categories in Bohol — Consistent Quality and Reliability Experience. It also takes the top spot for Video Experience in four provinces. Smart does not have any outright highest scores across the provinces, but ties for first place for Download Speed Experience and Reliability Experience in three provinces.  The mobile network experience is essential for tourists in their holiday destinations — not just in terms of entertainment, social media, and staying in touch but also when it comes to emergencies. The overall experience of our mobile users in the Philippines varies significantly between tourist destinations, which is often the result of the operators’ varied focus on their network investments. In some cases, mobile users enjoy faster speeds and have more consistent and reliable mobile networks than the country averages — but other areas significantly lag behind the national scores. The good mobile network experience in top tourist destinations in the Philippines benefits both domestic and international travelers.
