Tech summit tackles AI, cybersecurity in BPM sector

The IBPAP holds the summit annually to further strengthen the Philippines as an information technology-business process management (IT-BPM) services destination

The IT and Business Process Association of the Philippines (IBPAP) convenes the movers and shakers of the IT-BPM sector at the biggest industry event of the year, the International IT-BPM Summit (IIS) 2024 on October 2 to 3, 2024, at the Okada Manila.

Celebrating its 20th anniversary, IBPAP marks two decades of industry resilience and continuous growth amidst the evolving IT-BPM landscape.

IIS is the premier summit held annually to further strengthen the Philippines as an IT-BPM services destination; it serves as a venue for industry, government, and the academe to gain new insights from global and local subject matter experts, foster meaningful connections with one another, and address the pressing issues of the Philippine IT-BPM sector.

“The IT-BPM industry is navigating a complex landscape marked by rapid advancements in technology, shifting global dynamics, and evolving workforce needs,” Jack Madrid, IBPAP president and CEO, said

Impacts of generative AI

This year, IIS will focus on the challenges currently shaping the industry, while setting a forward-looking agenda for the future. Talent and skills gaps, cybersecurity threats, geopolitical uncertainties, and generative artificial intelligence (generative AI) are among the topics to be tackled at the summit.

Together with industry leaders, policymakers, and stakeholders, this event will open discussions on how to overcome these issues and leverage opportunities to keep the Philippines at the forefront of global IT-BPM excellence.

“At this year’s summit, we are committed to addressing these challenges head-on, from harnessing the potential of AI, to bridging the skills gap, and fortifying our cybersecurity measures,” Madrid emphasized.

A recent Bloomberg article underscores AI’s transformative impact on the future of jobs due to AI-driven automation.

Effective AI governance

To mitigate potential job losses, IBPAP emphasized the importance of ensuring effective AI governance using a holistic approach centered on four key pillars: Education, Engineering, Enforcement, and Ethics. These pillars form the foundation of the “4E framework.”

Education through public AI literacy initiatives should be prioritized. Collaborative educational programs between academia, industry, and government must be established to empower society with the knowledge needed to navigate AI advancements.

Engineering. AI infrastructures must be built aligned with human values. Democratizing access to resources will drive innovation and diversity in AI development, with a focus on ethical prompt engineering.

Enforcement. A systematic process of incentives and penalties for AI use is necessary to integrate AI considerations into policies and ensure responsible AI development that protects societal interests.

Ethics. A culture of accountability is essential to uphold ethical AI implementation, ensuring that AI innovation benefits all members of society and aligns with ethical principles.

“I encourage industry professionals, government, and stakeholders to join the International IT-BPM Summit 2024 at Okada Manila. Together, we can celebrate the resilience and innovative spirit of our industry as we shape a promising future and chart a course for continued global leadership over the next 20 years,” added Madrid.
