KOBE CITY, Japan–For Filipino jazz aficionados, Kobe City is a hidden gem waiting to be explored.
Known for its beautiful port, scenic mountains, and delicious Kobe beef, the city also boasts a vibrant jazz scene that captivates music lovers from around the world.
Among the myriad of jazz venues in Kobe, one stands out—Sone Restaurant and Live Jazz, a classy nightspot enjoyed by both locals and international visitors.
Nestled in the charming streets of Kitano-cho, Sone is only a 15-minute walk from Shin-Kobe Station of the Shinkansen or the Sannomiya Station of the JR-Kobe Line.
Sone is more than just a jazz club; it is an institution. Since its opening in 1969, originally as a ryokan (traditional Japanese inn), Sone has been a haven for jazz enthusiasts.
The restobar exudes a vintage charm with its brick-and-stone exteriors, wooden interiors, polished brass, dim lighting, cozy seating arrangements, sharply dressed waiters, and of course whisky! Three sets are performed every evening, each one starting 6:30PM, 7:50PM, and 9:10PM respectively.
The Sone experience
The Sone experience extends beyond its music. The venue offers a delectable menu that complements the musical experience. Visitors can savor a variety of dishes, from Prosciutto and Melon appetizers to local Kobe Beef Fillet Steak entrée, to Pizza Margherita.
These can be paired with a selection of fine wines, cocktails, whiskies, and Japanese liqueur. Beer drinkers may choose from Suntory The Premium Malt and Guinness.
It is worth noting that taking photographs of live musical performances at Sone is allowed only from your seat. This writer had to specifically ask permission from the restaurant manager to take photos near the stage but was allowed only two shots.
When I attempted to take photos a dutiful waiter barred me from doing so. Only when a Japanese lady companion explained things to him was I allowed to do so. After attaching an armband to my left upper arm.
Enchanting experience
For Filipino jazz fans seeking an unforgettable musical journey, Kobe City and Sone Restobar offer the perfect destination.
Here, the harmony of jazz and Japanese hospitality creates a truly enchanting experience, leaving visitors with lasting memories of great music and warm smiles. Whether you’re a seasoned jazz aficionado or simply looking to immerse yourself in the rich cultural tapestry of Japan, Kobe City promises an extraordinary adventure for all.
