A group of Philippine lawmakers, including Senior Deputy Speaker Aurelio Gonzales Jr., have filed a resolution calling for a congressional investigation into the spread of false and malicious content on social media platforms.
The resolution, co-authored by several prominent House leaders, expresses concern about the rapid growth of social media and its potential for misuse, local media reported. It highlights how the spread of misinformation can mislead the public, damage reputations, erode trust in institutions, and disrupt public discourse.

The lawmakers emphasize the need to balance digital safety with the protection of freedom of speech and expression, which are fundamental rights in a democracy. They propose that the House Committees on Public Order and Safety, Information and Communications Technology, and Public Information conduct a joint inquiry to identify gaps in existing laws and recommend measures to address this issue.
The resolution acknowledges the existing Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012 but recognizes the need for further action to combat the evolving challenges posed by harmful online content.
