Filipino startup OJT Connect aims to address job mismatches by connecting college students in rural areas, alumni, and career shifters with companies locally or abroad for on-the-job training opportunities.
Founded by Romel Romero, a Filipino tech founder based in San Diego, California, with a background in building mobile apps and websites, the OJT platform helps provide relevant work experience while showcasing the untapped talent of the Philippine workforce.
Romero said that since launching in March 2024, OJT Connect has grown significantly and is now used by students from over 100 colleges and universities in the Philippines.
The platform has been featured on CNN Philippines, ABS-CBN News, TV5, and PTV, he said.
Looking ahead to 2025
For 2025, Romero bared that OJT Connect plans to focus on broadening its impact and reach.
“We aim to conduct more in-person workshops at provincial colleges and universities across the Philippines, grow our talent pool across various industries—including software engineering, hotel management, accounting, and human resources—and connect this talent with companies abroad,” Romero said.
“Additionally, we are collaborating with various foundations and conglomerates, particularly in the education sector, to support the recently enacted law by President Marcos addressing job mismatch and upskilling the Filipino workforce for global competitiveness. We believe our platform aligns perfectly with this timely initiative. Looking ahead, our primary goal is international expansion, starting with Malaysia and beyond.”
