Mapúa University School of Medicine hosts symposium on AI-driven medical education

The Mapúa University School of Medicine, in collaboration with Arizona State University (ASU), recently held the blessing and inauguration of its state-of-the-art Human Health Learning and Innovation Center in its Makati City campus and concurrently staged a symposium that explored the transformative potential of AI (artificial intelligence) in medical education.

The symposium, themed “Shaping the Future of Healthcare through AI-driven Innovations in Medical Education,” brought together esteemed educators, thought leaders and innovators to discuss and share valuable insights on the integration of AI in learning spaces, the latest 

AI-powered tools and approaches, the best practices in curriculum development and to evaluate the ethical implications of AI in training the future generation of healthcare professionals. 

Dr. Dodjie S. Maestrecampo, President and CEO of Mapúa University, opened the symposium while Dr. Malaya Santos, Dean of Mapúa University School of Medicine, led the topic on integrating artificial intelligence in the medical curriculum. 

Dr. Emmanuel Tiongson, who graced the event on behalf of the Department of Health (DOH) Office of Special Concerns and Public-Private Partnership Cluster headed by Undersecretary Elmer Punzalan, shared perspectives on leveraging AI in government-academe partnerships for health.

Speakers included Dr. Ayedee Domingo, Managing Director of technology company specializing on the healthcare industry Metahelix, who discussed AI innovations in healthcare education; and Mr. Rino Datuin, Chief Education Program Specialist of CHED (Commission on Higher Education) representing CHED-NCR Regional Director Jimmy Catanes, who lauded the latest development in health and medical education and using innovations to cultivate a new generation of skilled, compassionate and technologically-adept medical professionals. The symposium was moderated by Dr. Nomar Alviar, Mapúa University School of Medicine Head of Faculty Development.

“The world continues to evolve and the methods of teaching and learning should keep pace with the latest developments and innovate. These changes impact the healthcare sector, a highly essential part of people’s lives. Mapúa University, powered by our collaboration with Arizona State University, is intentional in providing world-class and innovative learning space to future doctors and medical practitioners. The time is here and now for training and preparing our students to be at the forefront of the AI revolution in medical education,” Maestrecampo stated.

The Mapúa University Human Health Learning and Innovation Center boasts of advanced multifunctional, immersive simulation centers and advanced digital technologies and tools to equip and prepare its School of Medicine students to become globally-ready doctors with modern skills needed in the rapidly evolving healthcare industry. The launch of the facility is part of Mapúa University’s goal to develop cutting-edge, AI-integrated curricula.
