First in West Asia
In the heart of Dubai’s City Centre Deira, a whiff of annatto-tinged aroma cut through the air on August 10.
Indeed, a rousing signal as JT’s Manukan Grille introduced authentic Filipino Chicken Barbecue to the West Asia region. Filipino actor-turned-entrepreneur Joel Torre, co-founder of the 2003-born chain with wife Cristy Azcona-Torre, arrived on hand for the ribbon-cutting.
His celebrity presence drawing throngs of eager Filipino expats into long queues at Food Central.

The opening unfolded with culinary generosity. The first 100 walk‑in customers spending at least AED 30 received a complimentary Solo Meal Voucher.
Redeemable any time from August 10 through September 30, it was indeed a savvy mix of hospitality and introduction to their food offerings. A video chronicling the event captures Torre in action, underscoring the brand’s hands‑on culture: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/LS4mBgtYD9w
From backup plan to culinary bridge
What started as a “backup plan” in a simple corner stall in Quezon City – grilling tender, specially marinated chicken over charcoal – has ballooned to over 40 Philippine branches. Furthermore, a Singapore success story with two branches opening since 2024, and now this Emirates milestone.
For UAE locals looking for authentic Filipino flavors, the menu promises Filipino regional delights. Mouth-watering Chicken Inasal, tangy Cansi soup (infused with batwan fruit), and sizzling Sisig (choice of chicken or fish). All served with rice and that signature calamansi-soy-chili dip.

But it’s the hundreds of thousands of OFWs who’ve turned the UAE into a Pinoy hub—that stands to gain most. “We’re humbled by our kababayan’s reception,” Torre told reporters. Empathically, he noted cultural ties: “This represents Pinoy and Ilonggo pride through food and film.” Amid Dubai’s fusion food scene, JT’s Manukan Grille stands out for its no-frills authenticity. Truly a culinary bridge to home for migrant workers far from the motherland. Evidently, with the queue stretching through the food hall, one thing was clear: this isn’t just a launch – it’s a taste of belonging.
